Every now and then we go through smoothie phases. Sometimes it's as a snack, other times it's when it feels too hot to eat a proper meal and so they help us to actually have something. And then most likely move onto a bigger bite.

Either way, these days I always keep some frozen fruit in the freezer ready for smoothie making. For me, using some frozen fruit is the perfect way to make sure your smoothie is cool, as well as to let you use some fruits you might not always have fresh.

One of the great thing about smoothies is there are almost endless possibilities. You can use them to get in some greens, like my easy green smoothie, or as a drinkable breakfast like my apple banana smoothie and pomegranate smoothie. Make it into a bowl, like my mango dragon fruit smoothie or this strawberry smoothie bowl.

Sometimes it makes sense to add a range of ingredients, but you can also keep them really simple like this one. With only four ingredients, it could hardly be easier but it's a really tasty mix.

    A simple smoothie formula

As I say, there are so many options when it comes to smoothie making, but if you're looking for a really simple base, this is a great place to start:

    • A mix of fresh and frozen fruit. The fresh fruit generally has a brighter flavor, but frozen is both convenient and helps cool the whole thing down, without diluting as ice would. Though this isn't a hard and fast rule.
    • A thickener - this can be yogurt, as here, banana, or both. Other things can work too, like maybe some nut butter. This isn't just to make it thick (you could argue then to just skip the liquid), but to help it all join together into a proper emulsion rather than separate into layers.
    • Liquid - to balance out the thicker ingredients, you want some liquid which can be milk (dairy or otherwise) or juice. Which, for me, depends on the other ingredients. If your fruits are relatively mild and you have already included yogurt, juice often feels a batter fit to brighten the flavors, as here.

Exactly how much of everything is a bit more up for experimenting, and depends on both the fruits you use and how thick you want it. But that's half the fun!

You also want to think a little about the combination of fruits and other flavors you include - some fruits are sweeter, others more sharp. Some flavors dominate while others will easily fall into the background. Plus some just don't pair well. Some fruits have a ton of seeds that might be too much.
